You should be able to see the game through the eyes of the player and understand the impact of your work on the user experience. Senior Game Designer

As a design led studio, we believe the heart of every game lies in its mechanics. It is interactivity that makes our medium unique, so to succeed in making meaningful contribution to its advancement then we must excel at the discipline of game design. To support this vision and help take our design to the next level, we’re looking for a passionate Senior Designer to join the team.

It is Runaway’s mission to create games that are not just fun and profitable, but a positive influence on our players’ lives. “Engines of Happiness,” that sit in our players’ pockets. This ambition brings unique and exciting challenges to the table as we balance best practice engagement and monetisation techniques with design innovations that respect our player’s time and attention. Responsibilities

  • Imagine, draft, document, and iterate on the core mechanics of a Runaway title, defining the ruleset that governs player progression and interaction
  • Clearly articulate the gameplay vision to a multidisciplinary team, absorbing feedback and empowering all staff to make meaningful contributions to the design
  • Build and balance the in-game economy, including progression stats and pricing
  • Work with the Community Management and Analytics teams to collect player feedback on the live product, prioritising new feature development with the Product Owner in response
  • Work with the leadership group to inspire design-led thinking throughout the whole company, contributing to the culture of constant improvement and upskilling

Essential Skills:

  • 5+ years game design experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to wireframe mock-up screens and user stories that clearly define the end-user experience
  • Passion for innovative game design and creating games that are a positive impact on players’ lives

Preferred:

  • One or more shipped games in the mobile free-to-play category
  • Experience leading teams and mentoring others
  • Unity 5 experience
  • Engineering or artistic background that could assist with rough prototyping

Gameplay Programmer

We have an ambitious slate of titles we want to roll out over the coming years, and we need additional game programmers to help this happen! Come join our team at Runaway as we iterate on our current titles and create the future titles in our portfolio. Runaway is a self publishing studio - we create original IP titles for Free to Play Mobile.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside other programmers to maintain our current titles
  • Be part of new feature development - build, test and iterate on new game features
  • Iterate fast, getting quick demos into the product owner’s hands, then integrating feedback into the next revision
  • Work with the design and art team to develop concepts for new mechanics
  • Participate in the wider group design dynamic by play testing new features and products in the portfolio

Essential Skills:

  • Passion for games and creating innovative consumer products
  • Solid, practical programming skills
  • Proven game creation experience - this is a prerequisite to applying (send us something we can play, it can be simple!)
  • Initiative to self manage and ensure your time is being used in the most efficient way possible to produce fun experiences for end users
  • Fun and personable individual able to gel with an outgoing and ambitious team
  • Experience developing for mobile, particularly with Cocos 2DX and/or Unity
  • Knowledge of C++ or LUA or Javascript

Preferred;

Tertiary degree in Computer or Information Science

Artist

As an Artist, your role will be varied - creating new characters, new sets of creatures, decorations and environments. You will work closely with our researcher (who provides the initial details on new species and sets), our developers, other artists and Product Owners.

Responsibilities:

  • Create new environment and character art for current games and future products
  • Iterate fast, getting demos into the product owner’s hands, then integrating feedback into the next revision
  • Work with the design and art team to develop concepts for new mechanics
  • Participate in the wider group design dynamic by play testing new features and products in the portfolio

Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of 2d puppet-style animation using “Spine” and “Adobe Animate”
  • Passion for games and creating innovative consumer products and a good understanding of what makes a game visually appealing and fun to play
  • Strong traditional and computer art and design skills, with a striking portfolio to back them up
  • Understanding of the technology used in game development, its capabilities and limitations
  • Fluent in graphics programs like “Photoshop” and “Illustrator”
  • Initiative to self manage and ensure your time is being used in the most efficient way possible to produce fun experiences for end users
  • Fun and personable individual able to gel with an outgoing and ambitious team

Preferred:

Tertiary degree in Design or Art
